Violin being played

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits to having lessons at the Kodurand Violin Studio?

We are exceptionally qualified (and friendly!) teachers with many years experience performing at the very highest levels. We are also one of the few studios in the area to offer lessons on both modern and baroque violin.

What age do you teach children?

The starting age for learning the violin depends on the individual child. We recommend parents give us a call to discuss options, followed by a trial lesson.

Do you teach music theory and aural?

For students taking exams we suggest students have extra time with their pianist to help prepare them for the aural component. We can also make suggestions for music theory teachers in preparation for grade 5 theory exam. This allows us to focus solely on violin playing.

What if I don't want to take exams?

We tailor lessons to your requirements. Exams are not for everyone, and for that reason we teach a broad range of repertoire to keep students motivated. We perform violin duets regularly as a way of introducing key aspects of musicianship and ensemble playing, and many of our younger students also enjoy taking part in local festivals and orchestras.

Do you provide references?

We are very happy to provide references at any time.

I have been having lessons with Liv and Simon for over a year, having not really picked up a violin since I was a... child. I have progressed so much and achieved a distinction at Grade 2. I now have the confidence to perform in front of other students and have joined a community orchestra. I really enjoy my lessons as Liv and Simon are relaxed and personable yet still push me to achieve my best. Highly more

I cannot praise Liv enough for her patience and encouragement in showing me how, with practice, I can improve my violin... playing. Over sixty years without any formal lessons I had certainly picked up many bad habits. Her teaching is thorough, which I appreciate, but she is also great fun to be with and I enjoy my more

Simon has managed to take our daughter up to the next level after having reached a bit of a plateau. She enjoys her... lessons and crucially takes from them a wealth of ideas, tips and improvements she can work on. The lessons are so motivating that she comes home eager to practice and genuinely feels that she is improving and learning. Simon's experience and professionalism really do shine through. So glad to have a teacher of this level and quality!read more

Beginning to learn to play the violin as an absolute beginner at the age of 47 was a daunting step for me to take, when... I approached Liv for lessons. Fortunately she didn't think this was at all a ridiculous idea and under her firm but gentle instruction I've been pleased with my progress. She is a perfectionist with a high level of technical skill, not allowing me to get away with anything incorrectly right from the start, which has been very good for me. She is also patient, warm and approachable, so that lessons have been thoroughly enjoyable and more

Liv is a great teacher. A long time ago I sawed away at the violin for years (back desk of the 2nd violins in the... school orchestra....) with all and sundry telling me how bad my technique was. Earlier this year I decided to resurrect my violin playing, which has meant going right back to basics, and I am very glad I did! Liv is so, so patiently teaching me the right technique, putting right my terrible bow hold (among other things!). I'm getting rid of all those bad habits engrained in me from years ago and I can hear the difference already in the tone I produce. And the lessons are just great fun! There's a lot of laughter. I enjoy them greatly. read more
